Background

Approach
Beacon Forensic engineers conducted a comprehensive evaluation that included review of police reports, witness statements, dash camera footage, telematics data, and prior expert analyses. An exemplar Ford F-250 was inspected and compared to the subject vehicle, and a site inspection of the accident location was performed, including documentation and survey data collection. The team analyzed EDR data, applying speed corrections to account for oversized aftermarket tires, and performed calculations of rollover threshold and axle load transfer under braking conditions. The evaluation also included assessment of aftermarket modifications, including oversized tires, suspension lift components, performance shocks, modified steering systems, and drivetrain alterations.
Findings & Outcome
The evaluation determined that the Ford F-250 was traveling at highway speed as it entered the curve and that the aftermarket modifications adversely affected the vehicle’s stability and braking performance. The modifications increased the center of gravity, reduced rollover resistance, and diminished braking effectiveness, resulting in longer stopping distances and reduced handling capability. Under braking, load transfer further contributed to instability. These combined factors limited the vehicle’s ability to safely respond to the roadway hazard and led to loss of control and rollover.
Overall, the analysis showed that the aftermarket modifications compromised the vehicle’s braking and stability, contributing to the accident and clarifying their role in the event.
